'Der goldene Handschuh' takes place in post-war Hamburg in the 70s, where many elderly among the working class suffer from depression and alcohol abuse. Many women were forced to work in prostitution, resulting in the physical and mental scars displayed in the movie by their almost sheep-like behaviour. The film does not only tell the story of Fritz Honka, impressively played by 22 year old Jonas Dassler, it tells a story of the perpetual influence of the second world war.
I had no idea what I was walking into when I chose to watch this movie in the cinema. It is described as a horror film, however I would rather describe it as a thriller with rather dark comic elements, though I am not sure how Fatih Akin intended it. Yes, there is a substantial amount of violence and blood in this film, but it is a means to an end not an end itself. In my opinion, 'Der goldene Handschuh' used just the right amount of violence combined with the German schlager soundtrack dissonance, in comparison to the pointless over-kill of violence and in Lars von Trier's 'The House that Jack Built'. That and the almost fairy tale ending make this movie much more light-hearted, yet intriguing to watch.
